Is It Worth More Than a Cup of Coffee?

It must be Friday so it’s time for, “Is it Worth More Than a Coffee?” Scott Harrison from Harrysonpics.com sent me these pics of SCSI cables and a Diet Coke. He says, “Do you remember paying up to fifty dollars for SCSI cables and SCSI stuff? I do. Well money was tight then and I discovered Ebay.com. I bought mountains of SCSI and other cables for what seemed ten cents on the dollar! Well today, I doubt the SCSI cable pictured here is worth ten cents!”
I decided I needed to take a break from writing on Fridays. I need some exercise, so I have started, “Is it worth more than a cup-of-coffee, Fridays?” Any outside submissions would be greatly appreciated.

I must be Friday. Time for, “Is it Worth More Than a Coffee?” Dorothy Yamamoto, of Tigerbright Graphic Arts & Design, sent me these two photos.
According to Dorothy, “I've got ancient stuff Robert, such as my 20+ year old, dusty HP12C calculator which is still going strong. It's a classic and still being sold. And a favorite coffee cup is also old, a Dodger 1988 commemorative mug celebrating the last time the Doders one a World Championship (sigh). I guess the HP12C has the edge but then again, how often do the Dodgers win a championship!”
Dorothy, thanks for sending in the photographs. I think I will call it a tie.

Jason Anderson, creator of Canon Blogger, sent me these two photos. It’s no secret which NFL team Jason cheers for each Sunday. I’m going to pick the Broncos’ mug as the winner this week over Motorola v325i.
Nothing seems to move faster than cell phone technology. One minute you have the newest coolest phone and then you don’t They always want you to sign up for two years when the new models come out every year.

Jeff Gamet, author and managing editor of The Mac Observer sent me these two photos. I’m going with the Newton Message Pad 130 as the clear cut winner. How cool is the Newton? Although not a big Apple success, it had some incredible technology for its time.
It wasn’t easy picking against a polka-dotted coffee mug.

Just email me a photo of your favorite coffee cup (a cup of tea also works) and any of your miscellaneous high-tech items that has dwindled in value down to the two-dollar range.

My Palm Tungsten E which sold for $199 was one of my favorite pieces of technology. Unfortunately, the battery doesn’t charge any more, which really reduces the value. It’s tough for it to compete against my Apple iPod Touch. The Tungsten did have a nice bright, crisp, high-resolution screen which displayed photographs and my favorite bowling game. Also, you did need to use a stylus and learn the Palm graffiti for each letter, but I think it was faster than typing on the iPhone or Touch keypad.

Jane Griffiths of Notes From an Isolated City website sent me these photos. I am going with the glass of wine as the winner. It was a tough choice, how cool is the 1970’s Sharp ELSI MATE EL - 1100 calculator in working condition.

Jeff Gamet, author and managing editor of The Mac Observer sent me these two photos. I am going with the Mac Plus as the winner. Although, it may just be a sentimental choice, I just noticed one on EBAY going for one dollar with shipping of $24.95.
It was tough to pick against the Smile One My Mac software mug.

This Imperial Mark XII Flash camera which was made by Herbert-George Company in 1950’s, from my old-school camera collection, is worth more than a cup of coffee. Ok, not by much. The camera is worth is worth about $15, better than more of today’s technology has fared. The camera uses the discontinued 620 format film which is similar to 120 film still sold today.

Nothing could beat those awesome Zip Disks. How much more storage space did you really ever need? 100MB Zip Disks seemed to hold pretty much everything. Somehow, technology kept getting bigger and recordable CD’s got cheap. So much for Zip Disks, I’m going with the cup of coffee this week as the higher value at $1.89 from McDonalds.

I know I have an 8mb card for my camera laying around somewhere, but I couldn’t find it. This one is really rocking at 64mb. I am going with the cup of coffee this week as the higher value at $1.85 from Starbucks.
